Toward Greater Social, Cultural and Economic Control
The Quatsino First Nation Treaty Department is responsible for all aspects of the Treaty Negotiation process with the Provincial and Federal Governments. Since filing a statement of intent (SOI) with the BC Treaty Commission and entering the treaty process in 1997, the Treaty Department has been working to determine the Nations’ Treaty aspirations through close consultation with the Community, Band Council, and Administration. The Department hosts community consultative presentations in the Quatsino Hall on a regular basis, where an open forum allows for community input into the Treaty Process. Treaty Presentation dates are provided on the events calendar.
The Nation hopes that by reaching a Treaty Agreement we will take much greater control of the social, cultural, and economic direction of our Nation and honour the traditions and history of our People. This is an opportunity for us to, among other things, guide the education of our children more closely to our cultural ways, to control resource development in our traditional territory, to manage and benefit from lands exclusive to the Nation, and to create our own health care and housing services, infrastructural needs, all harnessed to long-term funding and with a vision to a sustainable future.
Further information on the Treaty Process, including the stages, can be found at the BC Treaty Commission’s website.
